1. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
2. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (Claire tried to talk me into reading these. I got the first book and didn't get past the first chapter. It read like a sixth grader wrote it)
3. Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett (Someone who used to come into the shop had a dogeared copy of it he carried around all the time. I thought I'd see what it was about and never got around to reading it.)
4. Intervention by Julian May
5. Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science by Atul Gawande (Bet you can guess why I bought this one. Of course, from what I understand now, it wouldn't have been that great a read.)
6. The Blooding: The True Story of the Narborough Village Murders by Joseph Wambaugh (Might go back and actually read this one sooner rather than later)
7. Bonk by Mary Roach (I didn't actually buy this one -- Baileigh bought it for me for Christmas a couple of years back. I read the other two, but I never did get around to this one.)
8. Nine Lives by Dan Baum
9. Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper by Patricia Cornwell
10. Atlas of Brain Function by William Orrison (Grey's Anatomy had mostly everything I needed in it. Everything else, I figured out on my own)

He knows that Molly standing at the edge of the door, watching him. She's trying to avoid being seen, fingers curled around the door frame so that she can peek around it whenever she thinks he won't catch her reflection in the mirror, but he can sense her. Smell her. Hear her breathing.

He thinks that she should know better, and briefly considers commenting to that effect, but he thinks better of it. So she's not in bed -- so what? A few more minutes isn't going to make or break her ability to function in school tomorrow morning and he has a feeling she'll wander off when he's finished here in the bathroom. She's just waiting for him to get done brushing his teeth and go to bed, after all. She, like Mohinder, seems to have some extra sense that tells her he hasn't been sleeping lately and she wants to make sure he gets into bed tonight.

He smiles a little around his toothbrush at the thought. The both of the need to worry less about him. With a great number of his abilities combined and working against it, it's not like he needs to sleep. He can function without it and they don't seem to understand that. Maybe it's because they've never thought just functioning is enough.

Pushing the thought away, he leans forward to spit a mouthful of toothpaste into the sink, and spots her hovering by the door as he straightens. She darts back behind it; he ignores her and rinses out his toothbrush, hanging it up next to Mohinder's with a smirk to himself.

He can't say he minds being worried about, even if he thinks it's ridiculous; it's nice to know that he's swayed Molly's opinion of him that much, that he's won her heart away from Parkman. He did promise to take everything from the cop, and even if he never said it out loud, never even thought it too loud, it's good to know that he's still a man of his word. It's good to feel like the winner. And, beyond all the sinister intentions he's certain he'll never be able to shake, he can't say it's not good to simply feel loved.

The smirk turns to a simple smile and he pads out of the bathroom, heading for his and Mohinder's bedroom. Molly follows a few steps behind him, quiet as a mouse, and he continues to pretend he doesn't see her, though he only closes the door halfway once he's cleared it. She lingers just outside even as he slips under the covers next to Mohinder, though he's not the only one who knows Molly's there anymore.

Mohinder shifts away from him. "Molly's -- "

He pulls him back against his chest, shushing him softly. "She'll go back to bed on her own in a minute. She just wants to make sure I got there first."

"She's worried about you," Mohinder concludes, softly.

Humming, he steals a bold kiss from Mohinder -- he can half-imagine Molly drawing little hearts on her notebook tomorrow with their initials in them -- and drops his head back to the pillow. And just loud enough for Molly to hear, his eyes slipping closed, he announces, "I'll sleep tonight. I promise."

That seems to be enough for Molly and she wanders off, heading back to her own bed, and true to his word, he's asleep just a few minutes later.

"Do you ever really look at these things?"

"What?" Nathan shoots him a small, distracted look, still mostly focused on the Olympics on the television that hangs in the corner.

"Russia's going to win. It's four to two against the Czechs, and it's almost the end of the third." He pauses, his fingers twitching against the placemat under them, and the television dies sharply, not broken but unplugged. A low murmur of protest rises in the restaurant and the man at the host's station is on his feet immediately, moving over to see what the problem is.

Nathan turns back to him, flashing him a frown. "I was watching that," he mumbles lowly. )

i.

"I have something for you."

Mohinder looks up, smiling. "What?"

His fingers curl around the box in his pocket. It's not a ring, that part of their relationship almost two weeks behind them, but it's just as good and he's just as nervous. So much so that he finds he can't find the words, no matter how much he wants this.

Somewhere in the distance, bells toll the start of the new year, giving him an out, and he darts around the table to crush his lips against Mohinder's, wordlessly. He has all the time in the world to ask later.

ii.

The new year comes with a raucous cry and an explosion of color, and despite the fact that he was damn sure he wouldn't be awake to see it, the sound is more than enough to rouse him from dozing. He shifts a bit, straying just far enough away from Claire to glance at the clock, and then he curls up around her again.

He waits, counting the minutes until the fireworks stop making the shadows shudder, and leans to brush a kiss over her lips. She smiles against his mouth, never really asleep either, and kisses him back, softly.

iii.

He hates the holidays. He always has. He figures that should be no great surprise to anyone who has even an inkling of how he grew up and how his mother was -- she was always at her worst during Christmas, shoving cheer and God down his throat -- but he also figures that they think he should be over it. Her saccharine sweetness and angel snow globes are long gone, and he has family and long nights spent outside, enjoying the winter and the season in earnest, now.

Still, however, he can't say he likes this time of year, and all because he feels neglected.

Last year, it was because he was some dirty little secret to be swept under the carpet. He kept his distance, trapped on the other side of Rockefeller Center while everyone skated and shared hot chocolate, as not to terrorize Molly or Matt or anyone else. This year, while he's an actual part of the family now, it's the way everyone avoids him. Claire pays more attention to Hiro than him and understandably so; Adam's too busy trying to patch things up with Peter and get to know Nathan; and Mohinder is just uncharacteristically cryptic when he's not being distant. He supposes that one or all of them could be planning some great holiday surprise, and their silence is just a way to keep him from figuring it out -- it's hard to keep things from him anymore -- but it still cuts through the haze of happiness he's been riding thanks to the rest of the family. It's still enough to hurt.

He doesn't speak of it to anyone, verbally or otherwise, keeping his thoughts and emotions under lock and key, and he decides he won't. Either it blows over in another week or so or it doesn't. And until then, he can sit by the windows when they get together for whatever Adam has planned for that particular evening and watch the world go by quietly, never bothering to put his two cents in to the conversations. It's not like anyone seems to notice, anyway.

To say the tree was in a sorry state would have been the understatement of a lifetime.

It had been trapped in a box and forgotten in a storage unit for so long that the branches had shrunk down against the cardboard, cowering in the corners as if it fear what would happen should it be discovered after all this time. The needles were bent, twisted into what looked to him to be tiny mouths full of prickly teeth, ready to defend against anyone who did find it and thought to put it up after more than three years. And layer of dust had settled upon all of it, making it look as though it had been iced in a fine layer of fake snow like some newer trees were. It was pathetic.

Looking down at it in the box, he half-wondered if he shouldn't simply drag the poor thing out back to the dumpsters behind his apartment and put it out of its misery. He could always just go buy a new tree to give to Peter, as promised. No one would really know the difference or care much, if he did. A tree was a tree, and this was embarrassing; he didn't dare show off what his childhood had withered away to. The new house or the house in the Hamptons or where ever Peter had planned on putting the second tree needed something grand, and this sure as hell wasn't it.

He made a face, soured by the fact that this hadn't quite gone as he'd wanted it to, and moved around the box to close the damn thing up, not wanting to have to look at it anymore. )
